Does My Home Need Electrical Repairs In Plainview, NY?

6 Warning Signs

Owning a home in Plainview can come with a lot of work. Houses in Nassau often need many kinds of repairs. This is very true of electrical repairs and maintenance. Making sure your home is up to code and safe is incredibly important. If you are unsure of whether or not your home may need electrical services, read on! Popkin Electric, one of the top Nassau County electrical companies, has compiled a list of these 6 warning signs of electrical hazards.

Always Changing Light Bulbs

Been going through a lot of light bulbs lately? If so, you might have an unhealthy electrical system on your hands. If you notice a lot of your bulbs are emitting low or dim light, while others remain bright, you may need to repair your system. It is probably time that you call an electrical contractor in Plainview to come take a look at what’s going on.

Flickering and Dimming Lights

It’s not totally uncommon for lights to dim or flicker, especially when they share a circuit with a major appliance. It is fairly common in older homes. If you notice a higher frequency of dimming and flickering, however, it may be time to call one of our professional Nassau County electricians. If your light bulbs are looking like a scene in a horror film, you don’t want to waste time!

Switches and Outlets Stop Working

Have any of your outlets or light switches stopped working completely? This could be simply a blown fuse. But if that’s been ruled out, you may need to call in one of our commercial contractors to assess the situation. Your circuit line could be damaged by something like repeatedly slamming doors or too many appliances plugged in at once. Let us take a look!

Repeatedly Blowing Fuses

When you realize you have a blown fuse or a bad circuit breaker, it can be a minor inconvenience. It shouldn’t happen very often, but if it is starting to, you may have a serious electrical issue. This is a strong indication that you have overloaded circuits and you need to call in a professional electrician from Nassau County. Be sure that you are only using the right size and type of fuses for your fuse box.

Electrical Outlets that Have Burned Out

Frequently used electrical outlets can get worn out over the years. This is pretty common in houses in Plainview. This can present some serious issues. If a plug isn’t holding in the outlet, or you need to jiggle the plug out of it, it is probably time to replace it. If this is happening to you, call one of our electrical professionals in Plainview right away. Burned out outlets can cause serious injuries or fires.

Burning Smells and Seeing Sparks

If you think there is a burning smell coming from an outlet or light switch you should definitely not ignore it. Contact a professional in Nassau County immediately. Sometimes blue sparks are common, but if it is happening repeatedly you need to contact an electrician. Either of these issues can be an indication of overheated wires and could likely start a fire.

Plainview is a hamlet and census-designated place (CDP) located near the North Shore of Long Island in the town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population of the CDP as of 2010 was 26,217. The Plainview post office has the ZIP code 11803.

Plainview’s origins date to 1648, when Robert Williams, a settler from Wales, bought land in the area. The land was considered desirable for farming because of a small pond named the Moscopas by local Native Americans, meaning “hole of dirt and water”. The remainder of the land in the area was purchased by Thomas Powell in 1695 as part of the Bethpage Purchase. The name “Mannatto Hill” had already appeared on the 1695 deed of the Bethpage Purchase, and the settlement came to be called “Manetto Hill”. Manitou was the Native American word either for “god” or for “spirit”.

The 1837 arrival of the Long Island Rail Road to nearby Hicksville brought a boom to local farming. In 1885, residents of Manetto Hill petitioned the United States Postal Service for a local post office, but were turned down because, according to several accounts, a similar name was already in use upstate. The hamlet was then named “Plainview”, for the view of the Hempstead Plains from the top of the Manetto Hills.

Plainview remained a farming community, famous for growing cucumbers for the huge Heinz pickle factories located in nearby Farmingdale and Hicksville. In the early 1900s blight destroyed the cucumber crop and many farmers switched to potatoes. After World War II, a potato blight combined with the desire of many returning GIs to leave New York City for the more rural Long Island, convinced many farmers to sell their property, leading to massive development in the area, giving rise to so-called suburban sprawl. Between 1950 and 1960, the hamlet grew from a population of 1,155 to more than 35,000. Most of the available land was developed during this period or otherwise designated as parkland. While overall development declined it did continue sporadically as smaller remaining parcels of land were also developed. In recent years, some of the few large remaining parcels have given way to gated communities, which are in contrast to most housing in the area. Some of these developments include “The Hamlet on Olde Oyster Bay” and “The Seasons at Plainview”, a residential community focused on over age 55 residents and first time home buyers.
